COVENTRY TKD BLACK BELTS ATTEND T-UK SELF DEFENCE COURSE

On Sunday 5th June, the newly formed T-UK association held a self-defence course at Stratford High School Sports Hall. Students and instructors from T-UK clubs around the country made the journey to attend the course, and Coventry TKD were privileged to be invited as guests. Four black belts from Coventry, led by Mr Cowley joined the rest of the students and instructors, ranging from yellow belts to IV degree black belts -all looking to improve their knowledge of self defence. The course had been put together with help from Mark Davies at Tactical Edge, together with senior T-UK instructor Mr Condie IV and T-UK Mr Archer VI.

The course kicked off with a thorough warm up from Mr Noddings. Students then watched Mr Archer and Mr Condie demonstrate various techniques and then split off to practice in pairs. Defence against hand & elbow attacks, kicks, releases, joint locks, knife defence and many more were all demonstrated and practiced in an informal but thorough manner, some of which were new and with one or two old favourites from many years back! After a long day, everyone was presented with a manual which will be invaluable in helping instructors to pass this knowledge onto students in their local clubs. The day was then brought to a close by Mr Archer with many new friends having been made during the course of the day.

Mr Cowley & Coventry TKD would once again like to extend their thanks to Mr Archer for the invitation to the course. A special mention should also be made for Mr Condie who made the journey down from Scotland to assist with instructing the course. I think all agreed that this course was well worthwhile and will become an integral part of the taekwondo syllabus.

Taekwon!

Taiho Jutsu Seminars from Feb 2011

FEBRUARY MARKS THE START OF SEMINAR SEASON FOR TAIHO JUTSU

January has been and gone, and with the worst of the bad weather hopefully behind us we are pleased to announce the first of many seminars for 2011.

February the 6th will mark the start of the 2011 season -this long awaited return to the seminar format will give all members the opportunity to get together and regroup after the Christmas period and harsh weather contributing to many sessions being cancelled.

The seminar is once again to be held at Stratford Upon Avon Leisure Centre, provided by Martin Reynolds, 5th Dan, and hosted by himself and of course Sensei Brian Eustace.

Please remember to bring both your Taiho grading books and your BAA licence booklet. If for any reason you do not have a BAA licence a temporary one can be purchased on the day. Also please be reminded that gi's, zoris and tanto will be required if you have them.

I am looking forward to seeing all of Coventry Taiho Jutsu club members on the day, and I'm sure well earned refreshment afterwards will give us all chance to catch up.

sept 2010 seminar and grading

GRADING SUCCESS FOR COVENTRY

Coventry Sensei Robert Cowley would like to congratulate his students for passing their grading at the training seminar held at Stratford upon Avon on the 26 – 09 -10.

Marco Roberts and Matthew Parsons proved once again why Coventry has the constitution and determination to show off the fine talent and the art that is Taiho Jutsu.

Sunday’s training started with vigour with Sensei Eustace on top form as usual. After all students were enrolled and the training was under way it was obvious that the day would be not stop action. After the warm up or during which ever way you would like to look at it the judo started, with standing, back to back, and ground work, a killer session was indeed on the cards.

With only a small number training on the mat after the summer break it soon became clear numbers were not an excuse for good training being avoided, we just had to work harder to fill the void. Despite all this sensei Eustace still made it clear he wanted us all to understand the rules of the Taiho competition, so to give us all a respite after the break that’s exactly what we did, each taking turns as referees and line judges in preparation for this year’s tournament.

The Grading’s

During the session all students were assessed by Sensei Eustace but all in turn were asked to demonstrate various techniques and Kata’s. First up were the Kyu grades Marco and Matthew. They were asked to show a range of techniques from restraints to modern self defence with the knife self defence being in Kata form.
This I am proud to say was executed with a fine style and an unrushed calm approach.

The Dan Grade’s

Coventry’s Mr. Cowley and Stratford’s Steve Vaughan were promoted to 1st and 2nd Dan’s

Well there’s not much to report really! Steve Vaughan (Stratford Upon Avon) a regular trainer at Coventry again proved why he won a gold medal in Prague as he demonstrated KEIJUTSU-NO-KATA, GENDAI-GOSHIN-NO-KATA, and RANDORI-KYOGI-NO-KATA, , to pass his first Dan.

Well done Steve and congratulations.

Mr. Cowley also produced fine form to demonstrate all the above and MUTEKATSU-NO-KATA to pass the grade of 2nd Dan

Vaughan Wins Gold

Vaughan Wins Gold at European Aikido Championships

Warwickshire martial artist, and regular practitioner at Coventry Taiho Jutsu club, Steve Vaughan, has return from the European Aikido Championships in the Czech Republic with a surprise Gold Medal.

Made famous by film star Steven Segal, James Bond movies and used by military and law enforcement organisations over the world, Vaughan has trained in the art for over 20 years under internationally renowned Taiho Jutsu instructor Brian Eustace - who on behalf of the Home Office in 1973, adapted the principles for the British Police.

Taking a late call-up, Vaughan joined the GB squad to compete against strong opposition from across Europe – with Russia and Georgia providing some exceptionally skilled combatants.

In the last of the 2 day events, Vaughan competed in a mixed martial-arts tournament, taking a big win in his opening bout against one of the top Russians. This was quickly followed by surprise success against the Georgian captain; a previous medallist at the last World Championships.

In the final, Vaughan made it an all GB event facing the highly experienced Londoner, Ian D…(?). After a well fought bout, the scores still level meant extra time to decide the medal positions and after two further rounds, Vaughan ended up the Gold medallist by just one point.

Delighted by the result, Vaughan said, “I couldn’t be prouder. I have to thank Brian Eustace who has been a major guiding influence since 1990 training with him in Taiho Jutsu, Aikido and Judo. Having also trained under the late boxer Jack Turpin, and more recently with Leamington’s Edwin Clearly, this combined with the vast knowledge of Eustace in unarmed combat, I’ve had opportunity to develop the physical and metal skills to excel in both sport and real-life martial arts application. You get the opportunity to learn so much about yourself, as much as the physical challenges - whether your 8, 18, or 80. I can’t thank my Stratford-upon-Avon and Coventry club members enough for the years of help they have given me.”

As part of the GB squad training at Loughborough University to compete in the 2011 World Championships, which comes for this first time to London, Vaughan has been invited to open new Taiho Jutsu clubs in Leamington Spa and Warwick to help those already involved law enforcement and security related careers, as well as those looking to learn the original and internationally taught self-defence and restraint techniques.

To find out more please visit our clubs or contact Mr. Cowley via the web site for more details.

Taiho Jutsu seminars

Start with great expectations

2010 Taiho Jutsu seminars started in Stratford Upon Avon this February, quickly followed by the second of the year at Leicester police head quarters. Great numbers of Taiho students spanning from as far a field as Exeter came to join in the training of this self defence system headed by Brian Eustace Sensei 9th Dan.

During the training Sensei demonstrated a range of techniques incorporating all elements of self defence including distance awareness and control. Students spent a gruelling four hours learning locks and holds with a large section of the afternoon dedicated to close in judo work practiced in static form and free play.

While the training was conducted Sensei assessed the student’s progress and invited players to demonstrate their skills to progress to the next grade in their training.

The grading consisted of demonstrating various techniques depending on the player’s grade in front of the grading panel.

Coventry put forward five students for consideration with great results, all students were successful.

Resulting in yellow belt passes for.
Jennifer Allen.

Orange belt passes for.
Martin Olner and Regan Blount Robert deans and Marco Roberts

Blue belt success for Coventry’s Uki,

Ruth Stronach, who deserves a very well done for unknowingly taking a Brown belt grading demonstrating great judo free play in a display of techniques ranging above the required standard.

Well done to all the above and Coventry look forward to holding our first seminar very soon.

Instructors visit Japan

Coventry Taiho Jutsu members Robert Cowley and Ruth Stronach flew to Japan this September 2009 to attend the 8th international Aikido Festival in Kyoto, and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the passing of kenji Tomiki Shihan.

I was proud and honoured to represent the self defence section of the BAA (British Aikido Association) and to accompany the technical adviser (Brian Eustace sensei 7th Dan Tomiki Aikido) to this prestigious and largest event in the history of Aikido, after accepting the invitation from the chairman Robert Jones 6th Dan Tomiki Aikido.

Japan is a bustling country with history and places to visit in abundance, cyclists are everywhere they seem to rule the roads and even more so the pavements, dodging these alone was very good self defence avoidance training. You’re never to far away from a national monument or a traditional eating house to try the local cuisine. For the most part of our trip we were not in the more western sections of the country so finding something to eat was to say the least tricky but very exciting to see exactly what we had ordered.

Sumo Demonstration.

After the invite I made many visits to training sessions in Sheffield and was invited to the squad training sessions at Loughborough university, along side this I gained a coaching qualification from the Baa and have opened a Taiho Jutsu school in Coventry.

So how did I become a member of the British Aikido Association?

It all started in 2005 whilst on a TaeKwon-Do trip with Mr. Archer to Atlantic city, for a four day training seminar with the now Grand master Choi Jung Hwa. During this visit I witnessed a master class session from a Dutch master demonstrating self defence; needless to say I liked what I saw and was eager to find out more on my return to England.

Kendo Demonstration.

This is when I discovered Taiho Jutsu or Arresting martial art, it’s a mixture of Aikido / Judo and police restraints all rolled in to one, and is known as the official self defence section of the BAA for the use of self defence and also as a sport in its own right. This system was introduced in the seventies by my instructor Brian Eustace sensei 9th Dan Taiho, 7th Dan Aikido, and 2nd Dan Judo.

The Tournament

50/60 competitors from the BAA travelled to the national heritage site known as the Budokan centre Japan, in the hope of winning the men’s individual tanto randori (sparring with a knife) with other entries from the ladies individual, ladies team, men’s team, and also a mixed team competition.

The event was held over four days with training seminars at the Budo centre before the tournament, these were held by the worlds leading technician and historians of Aikido, master’s Fumiaki Shishida and Tetsuro Nariyam, also during and after the tournament there where displays of traditional Japanese arts such as Sumo and Kendo, these were displays of the highest quality with an age range from 5 to 90 year old practioner.

The end of the competition soon came around and I’m pleased to say that the BAA won the men’s individual competition for Tanto Randori for the first time since the eighties I think, the ladies team where runners up only to a superb Japanese team, the men’s team also won medals in the Kata / Patterns section of the event, in total winning five medals for the great Britain team.

There where two main high lights for me and Ruth on this trip apart from the abundance of sites and wilderness to discover, the first of which was a complete shock as we quietly sipped a couple of beers out side a small restaurant, Tetsuro Nariyama joined us for a brief chat after seeing us enjoying the fruits of Japanese beer he chatted over an orange juice before leaving us to discuss the events of the day. This to a TaeKwon-Do student would be like sitting with Grand master Park Jung Tae or Grand master Ki Ha Rhee, it really is that big a deal in the Aikido world.

The second was training in the famous Osaka Dojo with the man him self Tetsuro Nariyama Sensei free of charge this was by invite only and it was a very intimate affair, priceless really,

Both Ruth and my self will be hoping to return in four years time to Tokyo, but in the mean time we will be preparing to compete in Moscow next year at the European championships.

Robert Cowley & Ruth Stronach
www.coventrytaihojutsu.com
www.coventrytkd.net
